Almayate (Waters) was the main farmhouse of the Nasrid period in the territory of Vélez Málaga, especially linked to irrigated agriculture. It was the only population centre that after the conquest by the Catholic Monarchs had the privilege of being located less than a league from the coast, which is why it is known as the "Seguro de Almayate" (Almayate Insurance).

Like all the towns on the coast of Velez, it has two clearly differentiated areas: the inland or Almayate Alto, which, despite being integrated around the Ermita Alta, has a high level of dispersion; and the coastal or Almayate Bajo, which is more grouped together and where the majority of the population is concentrated.
